Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Been squirreling away a few idea's and parts the last few weeks. Even bought a rusty MX5. So thinking now about a small engine. Like a fiesta 1400 or these 1.25. The easy way is the MX5 engine and box, plus maybe a narrowed MX5 back axle assembly. The mixer is 1800 5speed and a slip diff. Been welded poorly in all the places they rust, but goes really well. Almost a shame to break it up. So back to small engines, any input?

It is going in a B type, which will be small and light, I hope

MK2 Escort steering rack to column universal required. Seems the one I have is way to big on the splines. Does it have a u/j or a rubber doughnut thingy?

On the Legerra the rubber donut fouled the alternator so I binned it, replaced with a group 4 cast UJ but they are bloody expensive. Cheaper 'pressed' ones are available but even they go for £20 +.

They come in two sizes, long and short and are normally supplied without the correct high tensile bolts.

The rubber donut type normally come as part of a link rod rather than as a joint, although you could recycle two old links using a poly donut if you needed a short donut type joint.

Not that useful without gear ratio's even for electric cars. It has to assume a 1:1 gearbox ratio :/

well I found it useful, then again I'm into things, not negative like "Little Urn" your name in the Dutton community :-)

Pointing out the obvious is hardly negative Steve, There are enough gear calculators on the internet why not use the right tool for the job! My name is shit in the Dutton community because the cheap end of the kit car world is riddled with proponents of bodgery, and they dislike the likes of me who tell them the truth. Then they moan because their cars are seen as 'thomas the tank' - go figure LOL

just pulled the Saab engine from my sons missile, now what do I do with it? :-)

been offered a LSD for ford escort axle, very good nick wants £400 is it a good price??

Salisbury diff from an rally escort, they have got hold of atlas axle which I'm making stronger for them, they have offered me the diff complete.

Silverline make 'skateboard' sized trolleys which are sound for a pinto / crossflow / DOHC but i'm not sure i'd trust them with a fully loaded Essex.

Glad to see I’m not the only one with ‘step over and dodge’ garage!
