Could really do with some “thinking outside of the box” on this one with the intent of being safe and legal (mot).

It’s a strange one and having viewed other Dutton chassis on here, mine appears to be different.

I have a S1 on leaf springs and the seats are well just... seat pads. The car does not have any proper lower seat belt mountings (I intend to use 3 point harnesses). I have a location point for the harness eyebolt (just below shoulder level).

My problem is that under the tub where your bum sits on the seat pad, is nothing, no metal at all.

Options

A Scrap the car

B Make an alloy plate that bolts to the chassis (110 cm x 50 cm) and bolt the eyebolts to this. Is this classed as structural and requires welding

C Weld in some metal, but means taking out the petrol tank

D other solutions welcome

 

If I can’t solve this issue without loads of hassle / money then it will have to go.

I will get some pictures up tonight; in the mean time I have attached a rough sketch.

If you look at the photo of the interior you can seat where the previous owner has fitted eyebolts in front of the seat pads (mad)

Have you got any pictures of under the car? Im not familiar with the chassis or lack of it.

I would go for option B but use tube or angle as its far stronger. The plate would have to be rather thick to be of any use.

I don't see why the seat belt mount should have to be welded in. Car seat belts attach to the seat frame and that is bolted in.

As standard there should be four nuts welded on to the rail in front of the roll bar, the seatbelts bolted in to these. See pic

I am using 3 point harnesses on my S2 (similar chassis to yours) with seat pads the same as yours. The lower one of the two point fixings,  bolts straight through the main large chassis rail, bolt heat inside and the nut is inside the rear wheel arch. The upper fixing uses a stainless steel bracket around the roll bar at shoulder level. then the buckle release is located just above the trans tunnel and bolts to the cross member that supports the front of the fuel tank.

Cant believe ive seen the phase scrap the car on here lol, mine should have been scrapped 20 years ago 

i think mine was intended to be scrapped :((  i bet it came as a shock  to who ever was holding on to the reg, if they tried to use it after it was returned to my car.:))))  

Daryl, its another noddycar, i was expecting you to offer to get the 100" grinder out and finish the job 

Lol yeah another noddyand since we spent a day at a classic car show im being pushed to let the Mrs have it as she loves the old look   trying to figure out if i should save some pennies and get a phaeton for myself

i've now owned 

3 legerras   (1 spares car, 1 fire damaged and 1 driveable)

3 Sierras   (S2 sold on, S3 sold on and the S2 driveable)

1 Phaeton     (a large pile of bits in the lockup.)

I want the Beneto thats on ebay but finances and space won't allow it...It uses a modified Sierra chassis so technically it would be possible to 'rebody' my Sierra with it.

And eventually  they will take over   watch out you pheaton  owners  the noddy's have you in their sights  whahhhha

Attached are some piccies , you can see the seat tubs and the holes where i think the eyebolts should be. In front of the tub is a cross member, This has 4 x nuts welded to it but of little use me thinks. i remember thinking last year it was going to be an issue and glad that  i progressed this far as its the last big job to getting the car back on the road. I cant scrap it now its part of the family

Neil, you are looking in the wrong place, the belt fixings don't anchor in the seating tub. they pass trough it to bolt to the chassis and fuel tank cross member.  I will post a picture when I get to work. 

The two holes in the tub are where the buckle tails pass through, and you can see the hole in the cross member that supports the fuel tank, that is where they bolt to. In the bottom picture you can see the hole for the bottom mounting of the belt, just below the support bracket for the roll bar.   Hope this helps.
