Any search will have to be done using the existing data (ie, hillman/humber etc)

Comment by Adrian Southgate on February 25, 2016 at 9:15: Yup, I checked, its this form. You do have to give them a reason why you want the data and tell them to what purpose it is going to be put. As James's car has technically acquired Historic vehicle status then it shouldn't be a problem if he informed them it was being done for personal research and not for publication. Also good to mention the word restoration rather than rebuild on ANY correspondence with the DVLA. Rebuild is a bad buzz word in DVLA speak.

Comment by Adrian Southgate on February 25, 2016 at 8:38: Do you not have a VIN plate under the bonnet James? You do know we do replacements don't you. You know the number surely as even in Florida you need registration and I don't think they'll do that without a VIN will they?

If the original builder hasn't come forward by now then I would suggest that he could have passed away or just doesn't look at the internet. There are some that don't even own a computer.
