Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

When i bought a new master cylinder a while back i also obtained a used remote servo and fitted them at the same time, now with the old m/cyl and no servo the brakes had been very poor so it was no suprise that the change i made improved the brakes a lot but not as much as i had hoped, and since then no matter how many times i had bled them theres always been some air in the system. It had got to being the norm that i was bleeding them every month to keep a reasonable pedal so today i decided to bypass the servo as ide not tried the new m/cyl without it, so after makeing  a pipe to do this and  bleeding the system again went for a test run, and brilliant, no spongy feel no pumping required, the best brakes ive had on the Sierra in the four years ive had it! So off came the servo and surplus pipes, wish ide tried the m/cyl on its own in the first place.

As i said it was blanked off when i obtained the car, ill be honest and admit that at the time i was'nt aware that haveing it blocked off stopped it from working the other port properly.I have replaced it with a single port master cylinder to suit the the way the car was piped.

its also highly illegal to drive a vehicle with defective brakes....points on your licence and having a port blocked off is a guaranteed MOT fail and also very illegal....the brakes MUST work fully, having a port blocked off is not fully working.....change the master cylinder for one suited to the job, and the pedal ratio on the brake pedal.

The M/C and front calipers are usually sized to match then the rear cylinders are 'tuned' to suit. Thats why there are so many variations for the Escort/Capri/Cortina. Then throw in servo or non-servo !!!

Unless i can find the boxes i realy cant remember the size of the cylinders, i know the  front calipers are M16 with 247.5mm disc's and it's a MK2 rear axle with the dual piston cylinders, ill have a look for the other info, oh just remembered Vern you were spot on with with saying it would be the anti roll bar bushes in the track control arms that were causeing the steering judder, thanks for that not a problem now.

You had to brake hard as you were trying to push against the blanked off port I suspect.

What calipers do you have at the front and what size rear wheel cylinders? There are so many conbinations also what size of master cyl. Let me know and I'll work out what you 'should' have!

Mine had the smaller disc/calipers to start with Dave, but i changed them to the larger ones before i  fitted the servo and new m/cyl and it did'nt make much difference.

That i don't know Martin, all i can say is when i got the car it had a dual circuit m/cyl with one port blanked off and to brake hard meant that you were lifting your a##e off the seat and that was with no servo! The main reasons  i wanted a servo were that i knew i would be towing a trailer fairly often and i have a problem with my legs so any way of makeing it easier on  on the old legs ie not haveing to push hard on the pedal would be a bonus.

my sierra has a servo (which works ) and the brakes are fairly poor to be honest.......

it does however have the small 1300e front discs and type 12 callipers.......

I read a set of instructions.

It says under no circumstances fit a servo to a dutton as the braking forces will be 'too extreme' and will cause the car to lock wheels.

The only one I have had a servo on was my old series 2 sierra (Q365UWP) and I used that for towing a caravan, It was still like having a hair trigger on the anchors.

On the blue Sierra I have gone for a large bore master but as it's still running a single circuit system that should give me 66% up front and 33% to the rear in theory. I'll soon find out when they stick it on the brake rollers.

Could be Ade but to be honest the way the brakes are now i don't think its worth the trouble of locating a kit for it.
