Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

MOT today, glad to say it passed and the paperwork is complete, I have a ticket. Yippee. Noticed a noise, so did the tester, coming up the very steep hill to home something has let go, still running g but sounds very sick, flat as a dab, but no smoke. Compression seems good so it's deeper down, ends or mains? Timing chain is sounding noisy, will park it in back of number one cave and have a ponder. Need a set of ears :-))

Drop the sump.....could be big ends...

Its not a blocked crank case breather?

Got the sump off, its pretty grim, and grimy, lots of metal in the oil and sludge. Ends off tomorrow, see its throwing oil out the rear seal too. Time for a new elastic band I think.

The crankshaft used to eat into the block thrust wise, hope this is not the case Steve because the engine will be scrap.

Big ends gone guv ! all shiny and brassy, should be matt and silver, thrust washers look OK but have to pull engine now and check other things. Big decision time.........I'm going to wait and see what appears in my vision.....could be a chicken coup or a play thing for the great grand kids...........or even a very nice bonfire..........I could start it off with the new MOT paper and stoke it with the £20 of Asda finest unleaded I spent on it yesterday. Or..........wrap up the ends in PTFE tape and pass it on. :-))  .............Crossflow anyone????

Pinto is in a thousand parts at present, plus I need a whole clutch assembly, plus carb and inlet, distributor etc. Plus a new prop for the MT box, cheaper to put in a set of bearings and seals at present. Have to see if I can find some real work and save up.. Rest of the day I'm inspecting the rest of the crank etc. Just found the micrometer now need magnifying glass to read it, not easy this getting old.

The wife has made an executive decision:- abandon it until winter and enjoy the B+, I can't argue with that :-))

That sounds like an excellent idea!

I don't need this but just out of interest aren't these the same as for a Phaeton? I'm guessing s3/s4?

I think that your wife is right - enjoy the B+. The Devon Dog has a 1300 doesn't it? This big end going is a message from the gods to put in something with more oomph ... but only in the winter, like the boss says.

stick with the dolly engine its different

All new shells ordered and new thrust washers. Bargain price, got the lot for less then £50. Crank seems OK, bit of a linish up and it will go again. Rings are all OK. A couple of long days should see it thrown back together, despite that, I'm not really doing any thing on it until the clocks change, really !!
