Ok, so you can rule out a loose flywheel, Mr Heasemen is right about the screwdriver, you will be able to localise where the sound is coming from. Put in on different parts of the engine and listen to the different noises it produces, youll soon home in on the noise your looking for.
I wouldn't take any notice of the plugs at this point in time, not until you can get the engine good and hot and can rev it cleanly. Did you depress the clutch pedal to see if the noise changed?
Martin i have a thermostat housing for the Xflow with the fan switch on top if your in need.......
is the sump pan bent underneath? the cross flows crank runs very close to sump pan at the front......
