this weekend if it is dry i am going to see if i can get a Fiesta mk3/4/5 fuel tank with fuel pump for the Legerra.

However what do you lads use....especially if you have recently fitted a fuel tank.

fuel tank calculator

found this useful site.....

Why? well i measured the space in my Legerra for a new fuel tank, I also measured both of my fuel pumps (rover 214 and Mondeo....) they both came in at 7" deep. The max width of the tank slot is 12" and the max distance between the chassis rails is 44". A tank of those dimensions is about  60 L or 13 and a bit gallons, however i have a sheet of 1mm steel at 39" X 39" so the width of the tank will be 39" and that gives a capacity of 53L or 12 gallons. plenty big enough i think.........fair bit of welding though.

Yeah I did think it would be a good thing to use the TIG.......neater (potentially)

had a closer look at my tank....it looks like the Boat tank that was on ebay......and it is made out of 2mm steel by the looks of it, it weighs a blooming ton.....

i think i will be making a tank from scratch......

Well my fuel tank is out and even though it had a drain plug on the bottom and I got 12 ood litres out of it yesterday I managed to get another 3-4 litres again today the tank seems to be filled with foam which is floating about in large chunks.

Oh and the tank has no breather......I get the feeling that it's now bin fodder.

well if the weather holds i am taking the angle grinder to the fuel tank mounts and get it out of the car. the plan then is to extend the tank and to cut out a panel in the top to weld in a fuel pump mount suitable for a ford fuel pump. over all i think i can add another 7-8" on the fuel tank perhaps as much as 10", that will give 2-3 gallons extra at a guess. i will also likely change the fuel pickup and return pipes, as on draining the tank i got out about 12 litres. why is that a problem? well i run the car empty in anticipation of taking the tank out of the car and only put half of a 5 litre fuel can in the car to get me home...so over a gallon is left unused in the tank.....not good on such a small tank.

well the fiesta tank is a non starter for the Legerra.........and getting my old tank out of my Legerra is proving a real hassle because the tank is bolted in .....into a "U" channel with non captive nuts and bolts.......so it looks like the angle grinder will be paying a visit to my car. that means i will be committed to doing something with the tank as if it has to be cut out it may as well extended at the same time.....and altered for the future fuel injection project.

I can get a spare in the boot - 185/60x14. I have 65 profile on the back and 60 on the front that came with the wheels.

I think the only way to increase fuel capacity in the leggy is a custom tank. Tucked up into the void behind the rear bumper and occupying the same space as the original but shallower to improve airflow under the car.

The other possibility would be a mk1 capri tank, fitted where the rear bulkhead is now and then drop the boot floor into the space the tank used to be in. You'd never get a spare in the boot though. Escort rally tank is an option for that as it has a space for the wheel but it would still protrude into the passenger compartment.
