Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

For sale cheap locally. Just need to suss out if they're likely to be rear or front drive offset.

They're described only as "Classic" alloy wheels.

Wonderfully blocky and 1980s. Perfect for the Phaeton!

S1-S4 should all be capable of taking a 6"- 7" rim between the chassis rail and the body. The original Wellers were 0 offset, mounting face was central in the rim. normal width was 6" if mine are typical. If you fit a 5" rim with 1/2" offset then you will end up with more of the tyre inboard of the mounting face and therefore further from the edge of the wheel arch.

Rob or Dave would probably be able to quote more technical details but working on the assumption it is an escort derived english axle (front loading diff) then the Ideal size would be 6"-7" rim with 0 offset fitted with 185, 195 or 205 tyre. That should give you maximum track width with no spacers.

All that being said there may be advantages of having tyres that don't fill the arches when twizzing round a course made of cones. With the cones being tapered and having a 'foot' that can be clipped, a narrower track may be better as you will be able to get the body closer to the cones without actually hitting them.

The Wellers on my S4 are 5.5 x 13 with 205/60 tyres and are ET12 and I don't have any spacers

How much clearance do you have between the tyre and the chassis Pete?

At the rear, about an inch n/s and inch and a half o/s

That's encouraging!

Just for info, I had a flat tyre and needed to move the S3 around the shop. All I had was a 155 section Mk3 Fiesta wheel. This was hard up against the chassis and wouldnt turn once the nuts were tight. However, turn it around and it props it up just fine!

Don't worry, I'm not planning driving it like that!

Ah well - I've agreed to buy them now. At worst I'll get some spacers!

Oh, and because I'm an Excel geek, here's a handy little tool I knocked up. Caters for those of you who still deal in old money...

Sorry Roy, I wasn't trying to persuade you out of buying them, just making sure you knew what you might run into when you fit them. As it goes, I've not seen a set on a Phaeton so you may have something quite individual going on, I like em and think they will look sound.

No probs Adrian, for £40 quid you can't really go wrong. They do have a certain rustic charm!

I'll be sure to post up some photos!

Just seen a set of these on a MGBGT.....today in sleaford.
