Phaeton S3 Autotester - May '18 update

Can't remember if I updated the blog earlier this year or not, but last time I was out playing in the Phaeton I battered it over a cone and into a ditch. Not sure if it was the ditch or the cone, but I burst the radiator and put it out of action for the day.So, not wanting to pay Mk1/Mk2 Escort tax on a new radiator, I ordered a 3-row aluminium radiator. Intended for a Honda Civic, but cheap at £59 delivered and looked like it could be persuaded to fit. Needed a bit of angle welding in to act…See More

Morning all, been a while since I've popped in here!Right. My S3's currently rocking a CVH and an MT75 gearbox. I've been considering an engine upgrade for a while and have waited patiently for a 2.0 Focus or Mondeo with a good engine to drop into my lap, but none have been forthcoming! In the meantime, I've been accumulating spare 1.7 Puma parts, including engines, looms etc for another conversion project. I've ascertained that there's no available bellhousing to fit the Puma lump to the MT75…See More

£20 DIY Corner Weight Measurement

Posted on August 8, 2017 at 23:20 16 Comments

Just managed a couple of hours in the workshop. Been meaning to get the corner weights measured for a while, so have had a bit of time to thing about how to do it without handing over the car to a competition prep company or shelling out a fortune for proper corner weight scales. So... The Kemp Method. You will need:

8 pieces of 30mm thick decking board, cut to 320mm long. 4 need bevelled edges.

1 Salter Max Bathroom scale, rated to 250kg, or equivalent.…

Autotest Phaeton - updates Aug 17

Unfortunately, not too much to report.

Steve's had her out again, another demo run at the Alford Speedfest and one Autotest, but I've still only managed one so far this year. Been so busy it's been a total bust, fun wise.

Anyway, in terms of upgrades, about the only thing we've done is get the Peugeot 205GTi 1900 15" alloys fitted to the rear. Needed 20mm spacers, although I reckon 15mm worth might have done. Also discovered the car was already fitted with the…

I hate to say this, but I actually have pictures of a Melos being hillclimbed at Wiscombe park and it did OK as well.

Looks a fair buy  Roy, Nick, down here in God's country, does a fair bit of auto testing in his Dutton's, with a fair degree of success,

Roy has the short hardtop for the S3/4, the other type is a 'shooting brake/estate' which makes it into a hatchback by dispensing with the bootlid and covering the space with a rear lift back.

Looks like it has the makings of a nice car Roy.  Mine was barn stored for 9 years before I bought it- great for keeping the body and chassis in good condition, but I found the worlds biggest mouse nest in it ( luckily empty ) and half the wiring eaten away.  You have the advantage of an early registration , so tax free - mine is on a Q plate - registered 1989

So this is it guys. Been stood for three years so needs some re-commissioning, not to mention a damned good wash and de-mossing! Already started getting the knackered engine out but the lighting in the workshop is rubbish, so had to call a halt for today. Hopefully more fun this weekend.
