Steve K's rebuild

Thought I had better start a blog to count down the days on the rebuild of Steve's Phaeton. Well tonight the plan started to come together, we now have wipers (2 speeds Whooa), screen washers, a dashboard ready for the clocks and gauges. The to do list just got shorter. 15 days to go...

Today I have been mostly...

Playing with steering wheels and shopping.

Shopping first. Went with Sue to look for a bit of furniture to put in the now decorated porch, somewhere to put boots and shoes. Came home with a rake of suede like material which is now going to be used to trim the legerra. It'll go through the sewing machine which will make assembly times faster on the seats. Easier to work than the original plan of using leather and about £100 cheaper. There will probably be enough left over to make a…

Phaeton project

Went and picked up a Phaeton from Big Vern (Cheers mate!) as a rebuild project. Its an S1 but has some S2 bits from the looks of it like the rear bodywork which has the bulges for spring hangers.

The plan is to strip it back to the bare chassis and then build it up from there, new bushes, calipers etc and a new engine just not sure what yet! It came with some goodies such as some Revolution wheels with yokos, a nice stainless exhaust and a new hood.

Looking…

Anyone got a basket case Phaeton or Melos they want to sell?

Hi guys, sold my S1 back in August 2010 but still been lurking around. The missus called things a day recently so I have moved out and now have a bit more free time on my hands. I'm looking for a Phaeton or Melos to strip and rebuild, the state of it doesn't matter to much but would like a road registered one. Only got a few hundred to spend so think I might be looking for a while!

Here's another petition for your consideration.

This one is to enforce the 'anti dazzle' law applicable to car headlights.

Blinding Vehicle Lights or "Lightmare"

Responsible department: Department for Transport

Blinding vehicle lights are surely the most pressing road safety problem of modern times. When life-safety is at risk why are car manufacturers trying to out-shine one another by fitting dazzling lights that cause temporary blindness under the guise of safety? The law is…

My Phaeton Seats

Decided to have a play this morning with the Phaeton, as she has sat on the drive now for 2 months without even being started.

So after connecting the RAV4 defibulator manged to bring her back to life, and sounding good too.

the plan was to remove the drivers seat to see what mod's I would need to make to get the Westfield seats in. The Westie seats are 350 mm wide on the base and the back, the space I need to squeeze them in is 340 mm Hmmmm! this is going to be a little more…

Pheaton rebuild progress

Making full use of my Christmas pass, to spend uninterupted time in my cave........ good progress has been made on the Phaeton.

I have finished the roll bar by welding in a cross bar for the seat belt top fixings, out of the same diameter tube. Smoothing out the welds so it will appear seamless, welded on the bottom fillets and completed the welding around the shock top mounts, now I have them in the correct position. The whole assembly has now been removed and is ready to go off to…

Set Up

Took the Legerra for a set up at Mick Gardner Racing today, a race preparation shop specialising in suspension. The chap was really impressed by the weight balance of the chassis, he said a lot of track cars would be jealous of it. Turns out it has almost exactly 50/50 front/rear balance and only 5kg front difference left/right and 14kg rear. I posted the set-up sheet on my blog in case it's of interest. Not been… Continue

Project Hunk of Junk - Essex Advice Required

I am due to collect another Essex V6 block in a couple of weeks and then while building up a decent engine, I plan to use the old worn block to figure out how to work out some engine mountings for my Phaeton S2.  Does anyone have any photos of an Essex in a Phaeton?  Ideally in a S2 and showing the mountings.  Noticed the build manual (PDF from the DOC web site) suggests using Transit 2.0 mounts on Ford V6 engines.  I assume this would be the V4 transit not the pinto.  I found some V4…

Project Hunk of Junk - diff choice

Hopefuly just bought a 3.54 English diff for £113.  I not sure if I need it, but as most 3.54 diffs seem to sell for £200, I just had to buy it.  See what it is like when it arrives.  My Phaeton will be running a 3.0 V6 Essex with MK4 Zodiac 'box, I have a 3.89 diff, but fancied a 3.54 as it is as close to Capri 3.09 that I can get.  My momeries of driving a MK1 3.0 Capri were that the gearing really well suited the engine.  So I have been worried that the 3.89 would be too low geared.  I…

FIRE! FIRE!

OH! nearly lost the Sierra today, I was finishing the wiring all working well. Then somehow when I moved the the heater fan quadrant there was instant smoke then flame, and I was sitting there watching it happen. Brain in gear and snips at hand I cut the main power line to the heater quadant, but it was still burning, I had to dive under the bonnet and disconnect the battery which meant un-fastening the clamps.

After the smoke had cleared I could check the damaged, and someone up…

Project Hunk of Junk - Now have room to work on the car

Post Op recovering has gone well.  Had no news on the lock-up garage front, list must be too long.  So the only way to make space in the garage is to have another shed.  The in-laws have been staying for 3 weeks, so had the father-in-law building an extra shed using scrap timber I had lying around.  8 x 4 shed built for the grand sum of £24.  Shed now being filled up with Dutton parts, at last I can see space appearing in the garage. …

What a busy day

Started with oil and filter change on the Phaeton and found a possible cause of low oil pressure on tick over. When I removed the oil filter (Halfords brand for the X Flow) it had a relief valve in the bottom, the Fram 966 I was fitting as no relief valve which is as Original Ford. New oil in and started up Hey Presto oil pressure on tick over.

After that I moved on to the Sierra, deciding that the engine as to come out and sort the core plugs.

OMG SHE STARTED!!!!

Gearbox fitted, Diff fitted, prop shaft fitted, Battery, fuel, IGINTION and she runs, joy of joys a Sierra is reborn. 15 years and now she is back.

Now its a car again, rather than a heap of parts. Yes I'm sat here with the biggest daft smile on my face. The engine fired up after just a few tries and with no exhaust manifold fitted so I now have no hair on my arm as the flames from the head burnt them off, Brilliant or what. fitted the manifold (well pushed it tight against the studs)…
